Gal Viharaya

Gal Viharaya, located in Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka, is an ancient rock temple famous for its magnificent Buddha statues carved into a single granite rock. These 12th-century carvings showcase the remarkable craftsmanship of Sri Lanka’s medieval period.

Gal Viharaya, situated in the UNESCO-listed ancient city of Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka, is one of the country’s most famous rock temples. Built by King Parakramabahu I in the 12th century, it is renowned for its four stunning Buddha statues, all intricately carved into a single granite rock face. The statues represent different poses of Buddha, each symbolizing a unique aspect of Buddhist teachings: Seated Buddha – A large meditation statue under a carved rock canopy. Smaller Seated Buddha – This is believed to represent Buddha delivering a sermon. Standing Buddha – One of the most expressive and debated statues, depicting deep spiritual emotion. Reclining Buddha – A 14-meter-long statue representing Parinirvana (Buddha’s final passing into Nirvana). Gal Viharaya is a masterpiece of Sri Lankan rock art and Buddhist architecture, showcasing the elegance, serenity, and spiritual depth of ancient craftsmanship. The site remains a sacred pilgrimage destination and an iconic symbol of Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage.
